The United Arab Emirates has announced that it is sending its ambassador to Iran after nearly 6.5 years.

In a statement issued by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Sunday,

UAE Ambassador to Iran Saif Mohammad Al Zaabi will resume his duties in the coming days as part of an earlier decision to increase diplomatic representation in line with the UAE’s efforts to strengthen ties with Iran.

UAE ambassador Al Zaabi said Iran will continue to work with officials in Iran to further develop bilateral relations.

Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Sudan severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 after Iranian protesters attacked Saudi embassies. Amidst this, in 2016 the UAE cut diplomatic ties with Iran.

However, after years of hostility, the UAE began to ease relations with Iran again in 2019, following attacks on the Gulf and Saudi energy facilities.

In this context, last week, the UAE and Iranian foreign ministers had a telephone conversation on improving bilateral relations.

It is noteworthy that the UAE has had business and trade relations with Iran for over a century.
