The Health Council advises the government to offer children aged 6 months to 6 years with a serious medical condition a vaccination against Covid-19. Now only children from the age of 5 – with or without a medical indication – can get a corona shot.

Because the European medicines agency EMA recently approved the vaccines from Moderna and BioNTech/Pfizer to vaccinate children up to the age of 6, the Ministry of Health had asked the Health Council to issue an advisory report on vaccinating this group. He has now said that the so-called mRNA vaccines provide “a good immune response” for children up to 6 years old.

Because the disease course of a corona infection in children up to the age of 6 is usually mild, the new vaccination advice only applies to children in this age category with a high medical risk. “It concerns, for example, children with Down syndrome or with a serious disorder of the heart, immune system or lungs,” according to the Health Council.

Advice from the Health Council is generally adopted by the Ministry of Health.
