Protests against the Iranian regime have intensified following the death of Mahza Amini in police custody after being arrested by the morality police. Many Iranians have refused to support their country’s football team in response to the government’s crackdown on popular protests with an iron fist.

“He was shot in the head after being directly targeted by security forces following Iran’s soccer team’s loss against the United States…” the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights (IHR) said.

The New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) confirmed Samak’s death. Iranian officials have not yet said anything about it.

Following the news, Iranian international midfielder Saeed Esadolahi posted a picture of himself with Samak from the football team. When it came to know that the deceased was football player Samak, everyone was shocked.. It is noteworthy that he played in the American tournament.

“After last night’s bitter defeat, the news of your death sets my heart on fire,” Esadolahi posted on Instagram. Saeed said that Samak is his childhood friend and both have been in the football team since childhood.

“One day the masks will fall and the truth will be exposed,” he said in his post. “This is not what our youth deserve, this is not what our nation deserves,” he said in his post.

The state-run media accused the hostile forces of putting undue pressure on the footballers. Notably, in the first match against England, the players did not sing the national anthem. However, in subsequent matches, namely against Wales and the USA, the Iranian national anthem was sung by the players.

Domestically, Iranian authorities are reportedly pressuring athletes not to support the protests. CHRI released a video from Samak’s funeral on Wednesday, in which mourners could be heard chanting “death to the dictator”, against the rulers.
