Curoque El Zorro, the painters Ángel Silvestre and Karoll William Pérez, the footballer and director Luis Abréu, the lively nights of Bauta, the textile manufacturer Ariguanabo, the Almadanza project, the popular Cuinco, the promoter Ana Margarita Ibáñez, the group Yordance, Ariguanabo and its rich cultural history are some of the characters and events that remained etched in the images filmed by students from the San Antonio de los Baños International Film and Television School.

All of them became part of the history of that School of the Three Worlds, founded by Fidel, Gabriel García Márquez and Fernando Birri on December 15, 1986, a commitment by dreamers convinced that not only Hollywood and Europe were capable of counting on celluloid the great realities of this planet.

What’s more: the founding of the School was not an attempt to absurdly emulate the great centers of cinematographic power, supported by large monetary sums, torrential propaganda and resources of all kinds, but to represent hidden realities and unspoken truths of citizens. , cultures and entire peoples, often disadvantaged by an unjust economic, social and political order.

That was what the new creation was about and also about telling how we are, what encourages us, falls in love or falls out of love as men, women, children and the elderly, what lights and shadows surround us, what we laugh and cry about.

The School, today converted into one of the most important of its kind in the world, was born as a utopia, and utopia, as the Uruguayan Eduardo Galeano saw it, helps us walk, to open paths towards the Sun.

This is what happened with EICTV in the end, when it became a first-hand international reference and was a source of public recognition by former students who became filmmakers of legitimate renown.

The awards won by alumni of this film training center at festivals and events of all levels in Cuba, Latin America, the United States and Europe are countless, both in the documentary and fiction film fields, as well as the recognitions and distinctions received by the EICTV.

Fidel said in the inauguration speech that the School would be part of the struggle of our people against the infernal mechanisms used by media monopolies. And it has been by becoming a counterpart to that powerful and influential discourse.

After 37 years of existence, the EICTV can be proud of having graduated more than 800 filmmakers from 50 countries, having given workshops to more than 10,000 students and receiving all the praise from visitors such as Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Brian de Palma, Georges Lucas, Costa-Gavras, Emir Kusturica, Robert Redford, Spike Lee, Ralph Fiennes and Ed Harris, among others.

Curiously, one of the films by Argentine director Fernando Birri, based on a story of the same name by Gabriel García Márquez, is named A very old man with enormous wings.

The International Film School of San Antonio de los Baños could well be called a very young school with enormous wings, capable of never aging and always in search of the highest aesthetic and humanist heights possible.

And now, when I was almost putting an end to this comment, I remembered that through the images of one of those documentaries my face and my voice are giving my opinion about baseball, helping to round out the dream of some of those beginning Latin American filmmakers from this fabulous School. of the Three Worlds.
