More than 250 deputies are in favor of a commitment from the State until 2030 to relaunch French research.

A positive point in an ocean of bad news for the cryosphere. The holding of a major international summit for the poles was recommended by the “French Polar Strategy”, presented in April 2022 and approved at the end of Emmanuel Macron’s previous mandate. But French polar research is slow to have long-term visibility.

Certainly, an extension of 10 million euros was granted to the Polar Pod the Antarctic boat imagined by explorer Jean-Louis Étienne, and 13 million have been allocated to the Tara Polar Station, from the Tara Océan foundation, whose first expedition is planned to Greenland at the end of 2025. But the finance bill for 2024 does not release enough funds to restore the image of French research, even if some jobs and emergency funding have been granted to the Paul-Émile Victor Polar Institute (IPEV).
