Maersk shipping chartered container ship Dali had hit one of the abutments of the three-kilometer-long bridge, named after Francis Scott Key, the author of the words to the US national anthem, and opened in 1977. As the ship approached the bridge, the crew informed the control service about the loss of maneuverability, so they managed to stop vehicular traffic over it, reports the BBC. Surveillance video released by the media shows that the abutment the ship hit then collapses, along with the metal structure supporting the central part of the bridge, which falls into the Patapsco River. Part of the metal structure fell on the ship, blocking it.

At the press conference held on Tuesday, officials announced that road repair workers were on the bridge at the time of the accident. Two people were saved in the rescue operations that started immediately. One did not require further assistance, while the other was seriously injured. At the time of the press conference, six more people were being sought. Representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation involved in the investigation of the accident have stated that there is no reason to believe that the incident is related to terrorism.
