Mexico, a land of contrasts, faces considerable challenges in its health system. This scenario was highlighted during the recent webinar titled “No access, no health; patient care is a priority”, organized by Axios International, a global entity with more than 25 years of experience in the design and implementation of programs to guarantee access to medical care.

The Mexican health system, known for its fragmentation, has been subjected to careful analysis by experts. This fragmentation, as they highlighted, generates confusion, frustration and lower satisfaction among patients, resulting in delays in diagnoses and treatments.

Dr. Laura Súchil, a prominent clinical researcher, highlighted the pressing need to improve access and place the patient at the center of the health system. Valeriia Mykolaienko, Regional Operations Leader at Axios International, and Leticia Aguiar, expert consultant for a civil society organization, also participated in this seminar.

Stakeholder engagement

Mykolaienko explained Axios International’s philosophy, focused on access to treatment and overcoming economic barriers. She emphasized the importance of involving various stakeholders such as pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, NGOs and institutions to provide comprehensive support to the patient.

Dr. Súchil highlighted the elimination of fees for medical services and medications in public health establishments as a fundamental change in the Mexican health system. However, she pointed out challenges in the lack of clarity and communication during the transition from Seguro Popular to IMSS Bienestar.

Aguiar highlighted increased out-of-pocket costs as an initial obstacle for patients, highlighting the importance of ongoing counseling. Additionally, he emphasized that care should not end with treatment and advocated for a more robust support system.

The patient journey

Mykolaienko identified the need for a more holistic approach to supporting patients, recognizing that much of the patient journey occurs outside of hospital settings.

In summary, experts stressed the importance of digital health solutions, such as telemedicine, to address the lack of access to healthcare in remote communities. Dr. Súchil highlighted the relevance of telemedicine in a country as extensive as Mexico.

The webinar also featured testimony from Francisco Rodríguez, a patient enrolled in a Patient Assistance Program administered by Axios International, who shared his experience from diagnosis to treatment.

Five programs, one purpose

It is essential to highlight that Axios International currently implements five active programs in Mexico, focused on key disease areas.

The video of the webinar is available from December 21 on YouTube, as well as on Axios International’s social networks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported today that more than five million cases of dengue have been recorded worldwide, with a total of 5,000 deaths. The WHO has raised the risk level of this disease to “high” since its spread is increased due to various factors, including climate change. The extent of the spread of this disease is constantly increasing.

I take this opportunity to wish you the best in the coming year 2024.
