Already two people have died in the fires raging in Spain. The first is a firefighter who was killed in a fire in Losacio, in the northwest of the country, on Sunday. Daniel Gullón Varas participated in the “firefighting” device deployed in the Zamora region and died “while on duty”.

On Monday, local authorities in the region announced a second fire-related death. The body of “a 69-year-old man was found some four kilometers west of Escober de Tabara”, in the Spanish province of Zamora, “in an area burned by the forest fire that broke out [au niveau de la commune voisine de] Losacio,” the regional government of Castile and Leon announced in a statement. The emergency services assure that it is a shepherd and that he was found in a locality which had been evacuated.

Spain has been plagued for more than a week by a suffocating heat wave which has caused numerous fires that have ravaged tens of thousands of hectares across the country.
