The professional promptly noticed his confusion and turned to the Swiss Jura authorities. The lynx is a threatened and protected species in Europe and internationally.
He thought he was killing wolves, but he was actually chasing another species. This was announced on Tuesday 26 November by the hunting and fishing department of the canton of Grisons in the Swiss Jura in a press release that a game warden authorized to shoot wolves to regulate the species had missed the target and inadvertently killed three lynxes, including two cubs born this year.
“He was looking for the last three of the eight cubs from the preliminary pack, which had been released for slaughter in early September.”the press release states. The professional, hunting at night on November 16,was unable to clearly perceive the animals in front of him, despite his thermal vision system.
An investigation has been opened
Faced with his mistake, the game warden immediately informed his superiors and reported himself to the authorities. “A criminal investigation has been opened and the first measures taken”indicates the press release. “We deeply regret this incident and will look into it in detail.”said Adrian arquint, head of the department of Hunting and Fishing.
The lynx is protected by Swiss federal law and is considered “a kind of very high national priority”. It is also protected in France, but also internationally by Berne Convention of 1979and in Europe from Habitat Directive of 1992which fights for the preservation of natural habitats, wild fauna and flora.
