Gas Prices Fall Ahead of Holidays, Offering Relief to Nevada Drivers

Nevada motorists are poised to enjoy lower fuel costs during the upcoming holiday season. The average price for a gallon of gas in Las Vegas stood at $3.49 on Thursday, according to data from AAA, representing a significant decrease of nearly 50 cents compared to last month’s average of $3.97.
National Ranking & Regional Trends
Nevada’s position in the national gas price rankings has improved, now ranking as the sixth most expensive state for gasoline. Previously holding a higher ranking, the state has seen prices fall as other areas remain more costly. Currently, Hawaii leads the nation with an average price of $4.438 per gallon, followed by California at $4.33 and Washington at $3.97. Alaska ($3.60) and Oregon ($3.57) occupy the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Winter Demand & Crude Oil Impact
A spokesperson for AAA Mountain West Group explained that the current dip in prices is largely attributable to seasonal trends. “Winter driving demand across the country is typically low,” the spokesperson stated, “although we do see temporary increases during peak travel periods like the holidays. Overall, demand is down during the winter months.”
Contributing to the lower prices is the current cost of crude oil, which is trading at around $60 a barrel. “It’s a good time to buy oil,” the spokesperson added, emphasizing that the price of crude oil accounts for approximately 60% of what consumers pay at the pump.
Holiday Travel & Price Outlook
Despite an anticipated increase in travel – AAA projects 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1, a 2.2% rise from the previous year – experts do not anticipate any significant price increases in the near future. Prices have already decreased over the past week, falling 11 cents from $3.599 and one cent from Wednesday’s price of $3.496.
The combination of ample supply, reduced demand, and affordable crude oil suggests that a substantial price spike this December is unlikely.
