A huge fire broke out this morning (Sunday) in the South African Parliament building, in the capital Cape Town. Heavy damage was done to the building, but no casualties were reported. One of the ministers in the government, Patricia de Lille, described the event as “a sad day for our democracy”.
The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure also said that the fire was in the hall of the Legislative Assembly, but did not spread to other areas in Parliament. It is not yet known what caused the fire, but a Cape Town City official said the fire caused significant damage to the roof of the Legislative Assembly Hall, and the smoke detector system may not have worked.
