60-70% of the bee colonies in the Ararat Valley and around the city of Ashtarak have died because the beekeepers were not warned about spraying the fields with pesticides. The information was given to Sputnik Armenia by Armen Nazaryan, vice president of the “National Union of Beekeepers of Armenia” NGO.

In a conversation with Aysor.am, Gevorg, a beekeeper from Ararat Marz, said that they have serious problems. If we find out about it before then, we try to move the bees. However, we do not always know.

In addition to the decline of bees due to pesticides, there are a number of diseases, such as, for example, European rot, American rot, parasitic mite, which very quickly destroys the entire bee colony.

We use medicines for these diseases. But let me also mention that in addition to keeping the bees healthy, it is also very important to create an environment where the bees can easily produce large quantities of crops. For example, near us, in the Ararat valley, beekeepers move their bees to higher areas to get a large amount of honey. I have been engaged in beekeeping since 2000 and have not received any kind of state support.”

The Ministry of Economy informed Aysor.am that they did not receive any alert in this regard. “If there is an alarm, we go after it. In such cases, a sample should be taken to find out what it was made of. But we have not yet received an alert in this regard.”
