Awami League leader Azharul Islam Azhar has threatened to lock the Bhuyapur Press Club due to the publication of the news about the increase in the fares of CNG and battery-powered auto-rickshaws. He is the President of Bhuyapur Upazila CNG-Autorickshaw Sramik Union of Tangail, former member of Zilla Parishad and former joint convener of Upazila Awami League.

The leader of Upazila Awami League organized a meeting at noon on Thursday (May 4) at Bhujapur Upazila Parishad square. At this time, the workers present at the meeting chased Arifuzzaman Tapu, representative of Bhujapur upazila of the Alo newspaper. As the journalist took refuge in Bhuyapur Press Club for self-defense, they attacked there as well.

In the meeting, President of Bhuyapur Upazila CNG-Autorickshaw Workers Union Azharul Islam Azhar called the journalists as extortionists to unite the workers in favor of fare increase and said that there is no problem if journalists extort money, the problem has arisen because we have increased the fare.

He said, published the news against the increase in rent. Due to the publication of the news, I demand to remove the illegal Bhujapur Press Club building from the upazila premises. At that time, he also warned to lock the press club building.

At this time, leaders and activists of various levels including Zahid, the 9th ward councilor of Bhuyapur municipality and the general secretary of the organization were present.

However, Azharul Islam Azhar, president of Bhujapur Upazila CNG-Autorickshaw Workers Union, said that I gave the statement to lock the Bhujapur Press Club building in anger. However, there was no incident of attack on Press Club building or chasing of journalists.

At this time, he also said that even though the demand for increase in rent was raised, the workers are still taking the previous rent.

President of Bhujapur Press Club Shah Alam Pramanik said that a complaint has been lodged with the police regarding the attack on the press club. Various programs will be taken later.

Bhunapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Faridul Islam said that a complaint has been lodged with the police station regarding the attack on the press club. Action will be taken after preliminary verification, he said.

Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) in this regard. Belal Hossain said, I heard about the attack on the press club and the journalist being chased. Labor leaders approached me about the fare hike. A decision will be taken through a meeting with all the leaders including the upazila administration and according to the government rules, what can be done in this regard. The workers have been asked to collect the previous rent from today.
