a light drone that doesn’t crash into anything

The Mavic Mini, from the Asian company DJI, have an important advantage: they weigh less than 250 grams and, therefore, escape current legislation on the use of these devices. Thanks to this, we avoid having to obtain civil liability insurance and having to review the laws that govern the use of drones when we travel, which are increasingly more restrictive.

Additionally, the newly released Mini 4 Pro, which we have had the opportunity to test for weeks, eliminates all the headaches of flying them, just as it should for a casual or non-professional user. Still, it offers features on par with its older brothers, but with a price to match, from 799 euros.

DJI has changed the design of the Mavic Mini 4 Pro and has included a multitude of sensors both on the sides and in the lower area to achieve an omnidirectional obstacle detection system. Together with the advanced pilot assistance functionality (APAS), it makes the flight safer, and it is practically impossible to crash, especially when we are using its autonomous functions, such as ActiveTrack 360.

Tracking has improved considerably, but it is still somewhat slow in making decisions on the route, that is, it does not react as well to sudden changes as other DJI drones. In our tests we took it to a space with backlights and dark trees, where it is difficult to distinguish a branch from a shadow, and where the Mavic Mini 3 Pro was inevitably crashing. Although number 4 did not follow the route correctly, due to the slowness that we mentioned above, it was able to avoid the obstacles and follow its objective. For those of us who love ActiveTrack, this is probably one of the best new features of the Mavic Mini 4 Pro.

Good pics

As for the image, thanks to its 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor that allows you to take photos up to 48MP, 4K/60fps HDR video and slow motion at 100fps, all the content that the Mavic Mini 4 Pro captures is of great quality. . But where we can most highlight the change compared to the previous model is in the use of HDR, which gives a complete qualitative leap in video and images, with more realistic and bright colors.

Additionally, like the Mavic Mini 3, the 4 Pro is also capable of rotating the lens and recording video in portrait format natively, perfect for creating Reels and videos on TikTok. DJI has also included different lenses that attach to the drone, for example, to have an ultra-wide-angle effect and thus increase the creativity of the shots.

DJI has added other photography and video features, such as digital video zoom, as well as in-picture, MasterShots, QuickShots, Hyperlapse, and Panorama. Automatic shots, which always achieve a good result at the touch of a button.

Regarding weight, we should not be fooled by the 249 grams of the Mavic Mini 4 Pro, because if we use its RC 2, with a screen, we must add no less than 420 grams, so portability disappears. It’s great to put in your backpack, but if you’re planning a bike ride, for example, the weight of the extra batteries, the controller and the drone can put us close to a kilo, and it shows. It is one of the things that is missed about the Mavic Mini 4 Pro, being able to use it without the controller or only with the mobile phone with its autonomous functions.

Battery life is 34 minutes, which in practice translates to about 25-28 minutes of sustained flight. More than enough. We don’t think the extended batteries that DJI offers to increase the autonomy to 45 minutes make much sense, since it makes the drone weigh more than 249 grams, so it loses its entire reason for being.

The FHD video transmission at 60FPS from 20km away has surprised us with its fluidity without any distortion or jumps, thanks to the new DJI O4 system. A great improvement compared to the DJI Mini 3 Pro, which depending on the distance or obstacles the transmission could be cut off.

A limited renovation, but with meaning

Although in theory drones should not be flown at night, DJI has included an LED light at the base of the Mavic Mini Pro 4 for sunset lovers and so that we can locate and land safely. It is the first to include it, and we have found it quite useful.

The DJI Mavic Mini 4 Pro is a great drone that has undergone many improvements compared to the previous model, such as omnidirectional obstacle detection, HDR in image and video and DJI 04 transmission. They are not radical changes, but we can practically compare them to the Mini in functionality with the rest of the DJI drones, or in other words, we no longer have to sacrifice functionality in favor of size as happened in the Mini Pro 3.
