A Russian court has sentenced a 47-year-old man from Crimea to 14 years in prison under a strict regime for treason, because he provided Ukraine with information about the Russian army, France Press reported.
The Sevastopol City Court found that Igor Kopil was recruited as an agent of Ukrainian intelligence. In this capacity, he provided Kiev with video footage, images and information on Russian soldiers and military equipment in the period January-April 2023.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, thousands of people have been sanctioned, threatened or sent to prison for opposing the conflict. There is also an increase in cases of treason, terrorism and espionage, which are always accompanied by heavy sentences, notes AFP.
In the Chelyabinsk region, for example, an investigation has been launched against the cleaner Gulnara Bakhareva, as it is believed that she “justifies terrorism” in her comments on social networks, said the human rights NGO OVD-Info.
The woman was already tried on the same grounds in November 2023. Then she was fined 400,000 rubles (around 4,000 euros) after sharing on social media that the Kerch bridge was a “legitimate military target” after the bridge, connecting Crimea with Russia, was repeatedly attacked by Ukraine, writes BTA.
