The Ukrainian army concentrated its main forces in the Zaporozhye region and started a new phase of the counter-offensive.
This was reported by The New York Times with reference to two sources in the Pentagon.
Sources claim that the offensive operation in the southeastern region of Ukraine involves Western-trained military personnel and uses the most advanced equipment purchased from the West. Until now, these forces were mainly kept in reserve.
According to the newspaper, Ukrainian officials have informed the United States that the Ukrainian armed forces are trying to advance towards the city of Tokmak in the southern direction through Russian mined areas. If this offensive operation is successful, the way to the city of Melitopol will be opened for the Ukrainian forces.
Sources in the Pentagon said that the aim of this attack is to cut off the land route between the territories occupied by Russia in the south of Ukraine and the annexed Crimea.
It is also noted that the new Ukrainian operation may last from one to three weeks.
