A new species of ancient man discovered in China

by time news

The announcement of the discovery of a new species of ancient man was made by Chinese anthropologists following a study of a fossil known as the Harbin skull. This is reported by The Innovation magazine.

Back in the 1930s, a very large skull of an archaic man was found in the vicinity of the city of Harbin on the territory of modern China. It could accommodate a brain the size of a modern human, but in other respects it had significant differences from the skull of Homo sapiens.

The new species was named Homo longi. Geochemical analyzes allowed scientists to determine the age of the fossil – about 146 thousand years. It turned out that the skull belonged to a man in his 50s who lived in a small group that roamed in a forest area. Scientists claim that Homo longi could hunt mammals and birds, gather vegetables and fruits, and even fish.

The researchers also argue that Homo longi is closer to Homo sapiens than Neanderthals. It is possible that early Homo sapiens and Homo longi could even overlap.
