A support workshop for the development of the national disability policy in Gabon

August 5, 2023

The situation of people living with disabilities in Gabon was the subject of a workshop organized by UNESCO, in partnership with the Organization of Disabled People (OPH) and

the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.

The issue of people living with a disability in Gabon was discussed with a view to finding solutions that are favorable to them. This is the reason for holding “A support workshop for the development of the national disability policy in Gabon“. A meeting which was initiated by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, in partnership with the Organization of Disabled People (OPH) and supported by Unesco.

The President of the DPO, Jean-Stanislas Ellag pointed out in his speech that in all countries of the world, including Gabon, people with disabilities do not yet have equal access to Education. , Work, Health, care, culture, transport, accommodation, all sectors of life in society.

For the president of the OPH, the associations and organizations whose mission is to support and represent these people living with disabilities and their relatives, rub shoulders with this misery on a daily basis and know that despite numerous actions, but too punctual , this misery is still omnipresent and frightening. “The relative invisibility of People living with a Disability is the cause. Indeed, the voice of these people cannot be heard because of the inaccessibility for them of the places as well as the functions of participation and decision-making.” he indicates.

It should be recalled for useful purposes that in Gabon, according to the general population and housing census of 2013, 37,789 people live with a disability, aged 1 year and over, half of whom are women, i.e. a national prevalence of 2.2%. The prevalence of disability also differs according to place of residence: it is 2.5 times higher in rural areas (4.7%) than in urban areas (1.9%).
