Abel Ferreira’s Palmeiras loses Super Cup to São Paulo on penalties – Brazil

by time news

São Paulo won the Brazilian Super Cup this Sunday, defeating champions Palmeiras, coached by Portuguese Abel Ferreira, in the final, in a game that was only decided on penalties after the score was 0-0.

At the Mineirão Stadium, in Belo Horizonte, the first half was marked by many fouls, some hard, which earned Palmeiras four yellow cards – three for players Raphael Veiga, Zé Rafael and ‘Flaco’ Lopéz, and one for coach Abel Ferreira -, and one for Luciano, from São Paulo.

In the second half, there were no goals again, but six more yellow cards came out of referee Bráulio da Silva Machado’s pocket: Marcos Rocha and Luís Guilherme (Palmeiras) were tamed, as were Pablo Maia, Welington and Erick (São Paulo), in addition from the coach of the ‘Tricolores’, Thiago Carpini.

From the eleven meter mark, Carpini’s team was more effective, converting the four penalties they had available (Jonathan Calleri, Giuliano Galoppo, Pablo Maia and Michel Araújo), while Raphael Veiga and Gabriel Menino converted their opportunities, unlike Murilo and Joaquín Piquerez.

Abel Ferreira failed to regain the Supertaça, which he won in 2023, and which would have given him his tenth title since arriving in Verdão, while Carpini won his first title.
