Only a decrease in the birth rate will stop the increase in temperature on planet Earth

It will be possible to stop global warming only if the growth of the human population slows down within 25-50 years. About it “Newspaper.ru” said Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Leading Expert of the Competence Center of NUST MISIS Alexander Klimenko.

The Glasgow Climate Pact, adopted at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (named after the Scottish city where it was signed), aims to “keep global average temperature rise well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900) and make efforts to limiting the temperature increase to 1.5°С”. But, according to Professor Klimenko, no one can achieve these goals.

According to the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the world community has not been able to approach the speed of decarbonization of the world economy that is necessary since the adoption of the Warsaw Declaration in 2013. Moreover, according to Klymenko, the gap between the required and achieved decarbonization indicators is constantly growing. Consequently, the goals set out in the Glasgow Pact cannot be achieved within the specified time frame. The world community does not have real tools with which it would be possible to limit the rise in temperature on planet Earth within 2°C and even more so 1.5°C. “These opportunities will not become available if the growth of the world population is not stopped during the life of the current or next generation,” the Russian scientist argues.

The second important method of slowing down the process of global warming is the task of reducing emissions of methane, a gas whose greenhouse effect is 25 times greater than that of CO2. This can only be achieved if the largest emitting countries join the global commitment. But the problem is that these are the poorest countries in which the population is actively growing, which will nullify the efforts made by the developed powers to limit emissions.

The third goal in the process of stopping global warming is to stop the loss of forests by 2030 and then move on to their restoration. This is stated in the Glasgow Pact. The fact is that it is the forest cover of the planet that represents the most important manageable reservoir of carbon sink. Due to the constant deforestation over the past 200 years, the intensity of this runoff has been decreasing. At the same time, young trees with low CO2 recycling capacity will not be able to fully compensate for the loss of mature forest cover. Accordingly, as Klimenko pointed out, it turns out that only a reduction in the world’s population is a real chance to slow down global warming.
