Risky Helicopter Drop Delivers Aid to Flood-Ravaged Aceh Tamiang

A desperate situation in Aceh Tamiang, Indonesia, prompted a high-stakes delivery of essential supplies via helicopter on Saturday, December 6, 2025, as floodwaters continued to inundate the region, leaving no safe landing zones for traditional aid distribution.

Immediate Crisis in Aceh Tamiang

The Indonesian province of Aceh Tamiang is grappling with the aftermath of severe flash floods, which have rendered most of the land inaccessible. According to a senior official, “There is no safe place to drop aid. The entire area is flooded, empty land has turned into a torrent, and evacuation points can no longer be reached.” The challenging conditions necessitated a perilous operation to reach communities in need.

Air Police Undertake Dangerous Mission

Personnel from the Baharkam Polri Air Police successfully delivered logistical assistance to the affected communities, despite the extreme risks involved. The operation was complicated by minimal suitable locations for helicopter landings and persistent, challenging weather conditions.

The delivery team consisted of four individuals: AKBP Dian Didik Arvianto as pilot, Iptu Vidya H Mangundjaya as copilot, Aipda Sanioko, and Bripka Kukuh Wahyu. A senior official explained the gravity of the situation faced by the pilot, stating, “In those conditions, the Air Police pilot had to make a quick decision. In the midst of strong gusts of wind and limited visibility, he chose the only possible point – a narrow location which was actually very risky, but was the last hope for residents waiting for help.”

Precision and Risk in Aid Delivery

The aid was dropped with precision maneuvers, with the helicopter maintained at a low altitude while the air crew ensured the packages landed safely, avoiding harm to residents. “With precision maneuvers, the helicopter was held at low altitude. The air crew was on standby, ensuring that the aid packages fell on target without endangering residents. This decision was not without danger,” a senior official confirmed.

Upon landing, the community immediately gathered the supplies, which will be redistributed in stages despite ongoing logistical challenges. A senior official emphasized the commitment to the affected population, stating, “But for the sake of our brothers and sisters who are surviving the floods in Aceh Tamiang, this risk must be taken. Because at a critical moment like this, the safety of many lives is more important than anything else.”
