New Villeurbanne Fire Barracks Honors Fallen Lieutenant, Addresses Modern Needs

A state-of-teh-art fire station in Villeurbanne, France, will officially open its doors on Thursday, december 4, 2025, coinciding with Saint Barbara’s Day, the patron saint of firefighters. The inauguration marks not only the arrival of crucial infrastructure but also a solemn tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.

The new Villeurbanne-La Doua barracks is named in honour of Lieutenant Bernard Pauletto, a professional firefighter who tragically died on April 5, 2001, while responding to a gas leak on rue Jubin. The dedication serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent risks faced by first responders.

Did you know? – Saint Barbara is the patron saint of firefighters, and also others in hazardous professions. Her feast day, december 4th, is a day of remembrance and festivity for the firefighting community worldwide.

Originally constructed in 2004, the previous barracks underwent a renovation in 2013. However, according to a senior official, the facility “no longer made it possible to meet the requirements of the missions.” This prompted the need for a complete overhaul to ensure the fire department can effectively serve the community.

“It is also an prospect to pay tribute to colleagues and friends who are no longer with us,” remarked the head of the Villeurbanne La Doua barracks, Commander Anthony Fossat. The sentiment underscores the strong sense of camaraderie and remembrance within the firefighting community.

Reader question: – What specific upgrades are most needed in modern fire stations? What technologies or design elements are crucial for the safety and efficiency of firefighters in the 21st century?

The project was spearheaded by the SDMIS, with Zémorda Khelifi, president of the board of directors and 11th vice-president (Ecologist) of the Metropolis, acknowledging the necessity for the upgrade. The new facility represents a notable investment in public safety and a commitment to providing firefighters with the resources they need to protect the citizens of Villeurbanne.

The opening of the Villeurbanne-La Doua barracks signifies a renewed dedication to both honoring the past and preparing for the challenges of the future, ensuring the fire department remains a vital pillar of the community for years to come.
