The sister of the actor Mathieu Carrière is a real North German: she was born on July 26, 1954 in Hanover and grew up in Lübeck. Mareike Carrière attended the humanistic high school there. But she doesn’t particularly love school, but she loves acting even more. At the age of eight she appeared in Lübeck as the evil queen in “Snow White”. At the age of 16 she moved to the Lübeck drama school. She then obtained her high school diploma, studied French and English at the Sorbonne in Paris and obtained a diploma as a translator.

Film and television career begins in the mid-1970s

She plays on several theater stages, including in Lübeck, Paris and Hamburg. Carrière’s film and television career began in the mid-1970s. She had her first significant success in 1978 in the television play “Flamme Up”. She was chosen from around 1,000 applicants for the lead role of Katja, a student who wants to distance herself from the ever-increasing Nazi ideology. She received the Critics’ Prize in 1979 for this role. She can be seen in other television roles in “Felix Krull”, “The Second Skin” and alongside her brother Mathieu in the film “Yerma”.

First female patrol officer on German television

In 1998, Mareike Carrière and Jan Fedder appeared in the Großstadtrevier episode “Ellen’s Farewell”.

After that, she takes on many roles in television series, comedies and dramas. Among other things, she plays Ellen Wegener, the first patrol officer on German television, in “Großstadtrevier”. She trains in karate and shooting and interns with the police. Until her departure in 1994, she played a key role in shaping the ARD cult series alongside Jan Fedder. Carrière can also be seen in the “Praxis Bülowbogen” and “Schule am See”.

The multi-award-winning refugee drama “The Girl from a Stranger” from 2001, in which Carrière took on the lead role of a doctor’s wife, received international attention. Her last appearance was in the ARD series “Heiter bis deadly – Morden im Norden” in 2012.

From 1981 to 1994, Carrière was married to the film producer Joachim von Vietinghoff. In 1993 she moved to Hamburg and married the dentist Gerd Klement there in 1997. Carrière is socially active, is, among other things, a representative of UNICEF and supports the Hamburg Beacon Hospice.

Died in 2014 at the age of 59

In 2012, the actress suffered from bladder cancer, which the public did not notice at the time. Carrière undergoes chemotherapy and undergoes surgery. But the cancer is aggressive. On March 17, 2014, she died as a result of her illness at the age of just 59. The then NDR director Lutz Marmor says of the popular actress that she never allowed herself to be fixed on specific types when it came to acting. “Her great strength was her versatility – from series star to character actress. Television is losing an impressive personality. Our condolences go out to her family.” Mareike Carrière will be buried in the Hamburg-Ohlsdorf cemetery.
