Acute hepatitis in children: how scientists track down the origin of these mysterious cases

by time news

As broken as they are, the experts themselves speak of a “very mysterious” phenomenon. As of April 21, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified 169 cases of acute hepatitis of as yet unknown origin in children in eleven countries, including more than 100 in the United Kingdom and two in France. This Tuesday, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control gave a new assessment of around 190 cases. Aged under 16, these young minors generally suffered from stomach aches, diarrhea or vomiting, before presenting with jaundice. The majority of them were hospitalized, 17 even had to undergo a liver transplant, and at least one child died.
