ADB supports Azerbaijan in hosting COP29.

As Day.Az reported on Friday with reference to Trend, Noelle O’Brien, Director for Climate Change in the Department of Climate Change and Sustainable Development of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), told reporters on the sidelines of the ADB’s annual meeting in Tbilisi.

“We support Azerbaijan hosting COP29. We have told the Azerbaijani government that we support this and are currently exploring with them how ADB can directly support them in hosting this event. Obviously there are several ways. We are an observer in the negotiations as a bank, and do not interfere in substantive issues. But we provide some support in building the capacity of the government in the negotiation process,” she emphasized.

In addition, there are various negotiations that will be part of the conference’s priority this year, she said.

“This includes issues such as new collective quantitative targets, which represent a level of ambition beyond the current expected US$100 billion. We expect this to be part of the process. We also have the question of how much funding will be allocated on adaptation and various other aspects of global agreements. So, at the request of the Azerbaijani government, we will support this from an engagement point of view. We are also, obviously, discussing with them what investments the country wants to make. And this is an area of work that our industry teams are involved in and. our regional team for the Central-West region,” she added.

It should be noted that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan this November. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku, having become the center of the world, will receive about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) stands for Conference of the Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

There are 198 countries that are parties to the convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
