Addis Ababa: Start of work of the 44th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council as a prelude to the Union Summit with the participation of Morocco

The foreign ministers of the 54 member countries of the AU will proceed during this session to examine the report of the 47th ordinary session of the Committee of Permanent Representatives, the annual report on the activities of the Union, its organs and designated leaders.

The Foreign Ministers will also consider the report on the activities of the theme of the year 2023 “Accelerating the implementation of the AfCFTA” and the review of the roadmap of the theme of the year 2024 “Educating an Africa adapted to the 21st century: building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, qualitative, lifelong learning relevant to Africa”.

The Executive Council will also examine reports on the participation of the AU in the G20, the preparation of the election of members of the AU Commission which will take place in February 2025, the constitution of the group of eminent personalities responsible for overseeing the pre-selection of candidates for positions of members of the Commission, the strategic project and the draft orientation framework for AU partnerships.

Examination of the report of the Chairperson of the AU Commission on the operationalization of the AU Peace Fund, the report of the Council of Ministers of the African Continental Free Trade Area (Zlecaf) and the report on the situation of the Pan-African parliament, is also on the agenda of this session.

The Executive Council of the pan-African organization will also consider the election, among others, of ten members of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, and the election and appointment of ten members of the African Space Council, its president and its vice president.
