Adelphi Track and Field Breaks Two Program Records at One-Day Meet

by Liam O'Connor

The Adelphi University track and field program delivered a commanding performance at the Wilton Wright Outdoor Invitational in Fresh Haven, Connecticut, headlined by the collapse of two long-standing school records. The one-day meet served as a critical litmus test for the Panthers as they begin their ascent toward the 2026 Northeast 10 Outdoor Championship.

Imani Mudiay and Madeline Staley emerged as the weekend’s standout performers, both rewriting the Adelphi record books in their respective disciplines. The results signal a high ceiling for the program’s field events, providing a significant momentum boost as the team prepares for the high-stakes environment of the Northeast 10 Conference championships.

Mudiay’s achievement was a masterclass in rapid improvement. Having set a personal benchmark just one week prior, she surpassed her own mark on her fourth attempt in the triple jump, recording a leap of 11.21m. The effort earned her a third-place finish overall and established a new standard for the program. Mudiay is expected to carry this trajectory into her next appearance at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) for the NE10 Championship.

Passing the Torch in the Discus

In a poignant moment of athletic succession, Madeline Staley broke a record held by her own mentor. Staley claimed sixth place overall in the discus after a final toss of 37.96m, eclipsing the previous mark of 37.68m set on April 8, 2023, by assistant coach Kyria Moore.

The depth of the Panthers’ throwing corps was further evidenced by Lori Melville, who finished just behind Staley in seventh place with a throw of 37.05m. The proximity of these two performances suggests that Adelphi is developing a formidable contingent in the discus that could challenge for podium finishes in the conference.

Dominance in Mid-Distance and Endurance

While the record-breaking jumps and throws drew the headlines, Adelphi’s distance squad displayed a level of consistency that may prove decisive in championship scoring. The program secured multiple first-place finishes across varying distances, showcasing a versatile aerobic engine.

Eva Gonzalez claimed the top spot in the 800-meter event with a time of 2:24.63. She led a strong team showing that included Sade Davis in fifth and Krystal Patel in tenth, ensuring that Adelphi occupied three of the top ten slots in the field. This dominance extended into the 1500-meter race, where Caleigh Hopkins took first place with a finish of 5:04.62.

The endurance display culminated in the 5000-meter race. Christina Sakellis won the event, leading a Panther surge that saw teammates Karen Jackson and Maya Suarez finish third and fourth, respectively. This “podium sweep” of the top five in the 5000m highlights a strategic depth in the program’s long-distance training.

Lucia Kutner also marked a personal milestone, winning her first-ever steeplechase performance with a time of 12:45.91. The event served as a collegiate debut for teammates Natalie Niselson and Erin Lynch, who both completed their first steeple races.

Men’s Program: Freshman Impact and Personal Bests

The men’s side of the ledger was defined by the arrival of new talent and the steady progression of veterans. Jabari Holder, making his season opener, immediately established himself as a force in the Northeast 10. Holder won the triple jump, securing the top mark in the conference for the outdoor season so far among freshmen. He furthered his impact with a third-place finish in the long jump, ranking him as the second-highest freshman behind leader Olive Guzy.

Freshman Daniel Carsey also showed versatility in the hurdles. In only his second collegiate outing for these specific events, Carsey secured fifth-place finishes in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, signaling a high growth potential for the rookie.

Veterans continued to chip away at their personal ceilings. Brady Caroll returned to the steeplechase to post a personal best of 10:16.33, earning him first place in the field. Patrick Conley, appearing in his second race of the outdoor season, recorded new personal bests in both the 200-meter dash (23.03) and the long jump (5.93m), where he placed 15th.

In the 1500-meter race, Noah Mach and Mosiah Calderon displayed remarkable synchronization, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively, with only three seconds separating their final times.

Sprints and Field Depth

The women’s sprint and jump squads also contributed significant gains. Kayla Esposito and Shareve Blair both recorded new personal bests in the long jump, with Esposito leaping 5.38m and Blair hitting 5.41m. Both athletes doubled up in the 100-meter dash, where Esposito finished two spots ahead of Blair, who clocked in at 12.57.

In the 400-meter event, Angelina Arriaga and Brianna McGowan showcased the team’s depth in the quarter-mile. Arriaga landed inside the top ten with a time of 1:01.70, followed closely by McGowan, who finished eighth with a time of 1:01.89.

These combined results—ranging from record-breaking field events to dominant distance running—position Adelphi as a serious contender heading into the latter half of the spring season. The ability to produce top-tier results across both the men’s and women’s programs suggests a balanced approach to training and recruitment.

The team is now shifting its focus to New Jersey. Adelphi will return to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) to compete in the Lions Invite, which is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 24.
