Adeyemi: Dortmund Form, Goals & Impact

by Mark Thompson

Dortmund striker Karim Adeyemi, 23, is facing scrutiny both on and off the field, with recent incidents raising questions about his future at the club.

A Star’s Troubles Mount

Recent issues, including a public dispute with team leadership and a hefty fine, are casting a shadow over the young player’s career.

  • At 16, Adeyemi moved from Unterhaching to Salzburg in 2018 for €3 million.
  • Borussia Dortmund acquired the Bundesliga top scorer for €30 million in 2022, ten times the original price.
  • Recent behavior, including a heated reaction to being substituted and a legal issue, has led to criticism and a fine.
  • His wife, Loredana, reportedly desires a move away from Dortmund to a major European city.

Adeyemi, who has 11 appearances for the German national team, reportedly reacted with visible frustration after being substituted during Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 win against Mönchengladbach. “Karim didn’t play a good game. He deserved to be substituted,” sports director Sebastian Kehl stated after the match. While Dortmund secured second place heading into the winter break, Adeyemi’s behavior is disrupting the team’s harmony.

According to Kehl, Adeyemi initially attempted to head directly to the dressing room after the substitution, but was stopped. “I told him he wouldn’t go into the dressing room, he’d sit there,” Kehl said, emphasizing that players must “accept the coach’s decision and not behave like that.” Kehl indicated that consequences would follow.

“We’ve had some of these situations, we don’t want to see something like that and so he’s going to get a fine,” Kehl explained to Sky. Adeyemi’s performance during the match was also subpar, marked by disagreements with the referee and opposing players.

What led to Adeyemi’s substantial fine? In mid-November, a penalty order was issued against Adeyemi for illegal possession of weapons, totaling €450,000 (60 daily rates). He claimed he unknowingly ordered the items from an online “mystery box” and expressed regret for not setting a positive example.

Adding to the off-field concerns, reports suggest that Adeyemi’s wife, Loredana, a 30-year-old Swiss rapper of Kosovar descent, prefers to live in a major European metropolis and has reportedly requested a transfer for her husband.

Adeyemi initially arrived at Unterhaching in the summer of 2018 for €3 million before moving to Salzburg. He quickly became a standout talent, and in 2022, Borussia Dortmund paid €30 million for the Bundesliga’s top scorer, who had netted 19 goals in 29 games. Even then, those around him recognized a tendency toward “background noise.”
