ADOMA condemns aggression by the military against a lawyer; Fausto Taveras was mistreated for his black skin

The union’s president, Jhonny Aristy Tejeda, demands that the Minister of Defense and the authorities of the Public Ministry carry out an exhaustive investigation and subdue the military responsible for said aggression.

Santo Domingo. – The president of the Dominican Association of Lawyers (ADOMA), Jhonny Aristy Tejeda, condemned the aggression perpetrated by the military against the lawyer Fausto Taveras, in an incident registered in the province of Valverde.

In this sense, he denounced that the military brutally beat the lawyer, despite the fact that he identified himself at the time of his arrest.

Aristy Tejeda He demanded that the competent authorities clarify the circumstances of the incident, which he described as embarrassing, as well as that they identify the soldiers responsible and bring them to justice.

“Those responsible for this horrendous action by the military must be punished, since their actions go against the entire population and do not correspond to the behavior expected of that institution. We cannot tolerate this type of behavior. Society needs military that respect the dignity of people and follow the appropriate protocols,” said the leader of the union that represents the legal community of the Dominican Republic with indignation.

Likewise, on behalf of the organization, he indicated that they will be attentive to the results of the investigation, in collaboration with the section of the Bar Association of the province of Valverdechaired by the prominent trade unionist Juan De Jesús Rodríguez, and will offer accompaniment and legal assistance during the process.

“We will be pending the investigation of this case. We cannot mistreat citizens because of their skin color, whether they are nationals or foreigners. We must review the action protocols to avoid abuses like these. Our colleague Fausto Taveras is well recognized in the province Valverde, and we have information that he was also part of the armed forces. The legal community and society in general demand certainty to avoid confrontations that disturb order and affect lives,” said the lawyer.

“We call on the authorities to carry out the necessary investigations, identify those responsible and bring them to justice for this shameful act. Together with the provincial Bar Association, we will accompany our colleague Fausto Taveras in the actions that should be undertaken after an objective investigation,” he stressed.
