JAKARTA – The Russian and Ukrainian war is still ongoing with casualties on both sides. A variety of the latest combat technology was also demonstrated in this bloody conflict which has been going on for more than two years. Starting from drone tanks, guided missiles, and even sophisticated sniper rifles.

Ukrainian snipers were recently seen equipped with new equipment in the form of advanced GPNVG night goggles and M110 SASS rifles. Apart from that, Ukrainian special forces are also equipped with a variety of the latest combat equipment to maximize the effectiveness of military operations and survive on the battlefield.

Reporting from Essanews, Saturday (2/12/2023), a Ukrainian sniper from a special unit was recently seen equipped with camouflage clothing, GPNVG night vision goggles and an M110 SASS rifle. This deadly combination is suitable for engaging targets at distances greater than 2,624 feet, even at night.

GPNVG Night Vision Goggles

GPNVG night vision goggles first appeared in Operation Neptune Spear in 2011. At that time, this device was used by the SEAL Team Six special forces to capture Osama bin Laden.

The GPNVG night goggles have four lenses, providing a viewing angle of up to 97 degrees, a significant improvement over standard models which have viewing angles of 40 and 50 degrees.
Although synchronizing images across four lenses was a challenge, the engineers at L3 Harris managed to solve this problem. The two central lenses offer pupillary distance adjustment, while the outer lenses provide peripheral vision.

GPNVG night vision goggles also feature a white phosphor light amplifier, which does not produce green light. Weighing 27 ounces, the glasses are powered by four CR123A batteries, enough for about 30 hours of operation. These glasses are priced at USD 40,000.

M110 SASS rifle

Ukrainian snipers rely heavily on M110 SASS rifles supplied by the United States. Introduced in 2008, the rifle’s design was inspired by the SR-25. The M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle (SASS) was designed by Knights Armament Company (KAC). Because it is more sophisticated and reliable on the battlefield, this rifle is starting to replace the modified versions of the M14 and M24 rifles.

The M110 SASS is based on the AR-10 family of weapons, 7.62×51 mm NATO caliber (.308 Winchester), noted for its accuracy of approximately 1 MOA. MOA is used to judge a rifle’s accuracy by measuring the maximum distance between bullet impacts. For example, at 328 yards, the M110 SASS can repeatedly hit a 3.5 inch diameter target.

All of these features are packed into a design that weighs less than 15 pounds, including sight optics and a 20-inch barrel length. However, as time went by, the dimensions of this rifle, a little over one yard without sound protection, came under criticism. This led to the announcement of the Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) program in 2012, to find a better solution.

Ultimately, the HK G28 rifle, designated the M110A1, replaced several older M110 SASS models in 2016. It is likely that these replaced units were shipped to Ukraine. The M110 SASS offers superior capabilities compared to the M14, FN FAL, SWD, or modified HK G3 rifles. The civilian variant of the M110 SASS rifle is priced at USD 30,000.
