The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has rescheduled the 2027 Asian Cup to December 23, 2027, through January 21, 2028. This move replaces the original January dates following consultations with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) and the Local Organising Committee regarding Middle East security.
AFC Reschedules Tournament Dates
The AFC announced the change on November 3, 2026. Officials cited extraordinary circumstances
in the region for the decision to move the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
The tournament was originally set for January 7 to February 5, 2027. Instead of relocating the event, the governing body chose to change the calendar.
Yasser Al-Misehal is the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee. He confirmed that preparations continue under the new timeline.
The committee is working with the AFC and partners to ensure a successful event.

Indonesia Gains Extra Preparation Time
Erick Thohir, Chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), supports the rescheduling. He noted it provides the national team with a longer runway for development.
Indonesia is currently in Group F with Japan, Qatar, and Thailand. Thohir emphasized that player safety remains the priority while balancing competitive consistency.
For me, this benefits Indonesia because our preparation is longer.
Erick Thohir, Chairman of PSSI
The PSSI must now update its immediate schedule. The extended lead time allows the coaching staff to build a more cohesive squad before facing group stage opponents.
Leagues Adjust Match Calendars
Ferry Paulus confirmed the organization is adjusting the league schedule. This may involve moving matches originally slated for February 2027 to January.
The goal is to conclude all tiers of competition by May 2027. This reverses a previous projection that would have extended the season into June.
He suggested that clubs would likely welcome the change. It reduces the length of the off-season and keeps players match-fit.
National Teams Manage Leadership Changes
The delay complicates coaching contracts for several national teams. In Japan, the Japan Football Association (JFA) confirmed that Go Oiwa will succeed Hajime Moriyasu.

Moriyasu’s contract expires in February 2027. He will not lead the team for the rescheduled tournament.
Moriyasu stated he accepts the reality of the situation. He noted the new management team will have more time to prepare for the subsequent World Cup cycle.
In Saudi Arabia, sources within the federation indicated that Georgios Donis will remain in his role. Officials confirmed Donis will continue with the team and that his contract will be extended by one year.
The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) noted that the shift impacts operational plans. It provides a professional opportunity to test new personnel and manage the fitness levels of key players ahead of the competition.
