Russell Brand Convicted of Rape and Three Counts of Sexual Assault

A London jury convicted actor and comedian Russell Brand of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court. The 51-year-old was acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.

Judge Remands Brand into Custody Ahead of Sentencing

Judge Joel Bennathan remanded Brand into custody immediately following the verdict. Addressing the defendant, Mr Justice Bennathan stated, The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term. My current view is that I therefore have to remand you into custody. Brand is scheduled to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, Nov. 9. A jury of eight men and four women reached the verdict after deliberating for more than eight hours over the course of two days.

Details of the Convictions

The charges against Brand were brought by six different women, spanning a 10-year period between 1999 and 2009. During the trial, prosecutors characterized Brand as a ruthless and manipulative sexual predator. While Brand pleaded not guilty to all charges, testifying that he had been obsessed with sex as a younger man, the jury ultimately found him guilty of four specific offenses:

Russell Brand convicted of rape & sexual assault
  • Grabbing a woman’s breasts during a party at a bar in London’s Soho neighborhood in the summer of 2004.
  • Sexually assaulting a woman at London radio station Choice FM in 2004 or 2005.
  • Sexually assaulting a Capital Radio worker after encountering her in a corridor in 2005.
  • Raping a 21-year-old fan at his home in Hampstead in 2009, during which he pushed the victim face down into a pillow.

The women involved had approached authorities years after the alleged assaults, with many noting that the release of a 2023 documentary featuring anonymous claims against the star influenced their decision to come forward. Throughout the proceedings, Brand suggested the allegations were part of a coordinated attack targeting his current work as an online political commentator and wellness influencer.

Police Detail How Suspect Exploited His Influence

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police Service echoed this sentiment, noting that the outcome showed the resilience of the victims. Without their bravery, this outcome would not have been possible, Furphy said. He added that as Brand’s public profile expanded, so too did his sense of entitlement, leading him to exploit his influence to offend against women. The force noted that the suspect has previously been interviewed under caution regarding those separate claims.

Father Expresses Shock Following the Trial Outcome

Brand became a household name in the U.K. during the 2000s, gaining fame as a broadcaster and comedian. His career moved into mainstream film, including roles in the 2010 movie Get Him to the Greek and the 2011 film Arthur.

Following the conclusion of the trial, Brand’s father, Ron Brand, expressed shock at the outcome, telling the BBC that he was bemused and shocked and stating, I just didn’t expect this – it’s wrong. As Brand left the courtroom, his associate Ian Winter engaged in a heated exchange with journalist Rosamund Urwin. When Winter asked if she was pleased with herself, and she replied that she was pleased justice had been done, Winter responded, Well, it wasn’t.
