UN against year-long ban on education for girls in Afghanistan Markus Potzel, head of the UN mission in Afghanistan, said it was a “tragic, embarrassing and avoidable anniversary”. After the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, girls and women were denied education. Fifty Afghan girls wrote an open letter against the Taliban’s ban on education over the past year under the title ‘A Dark Year: Afghan Girls Write to Leaders of Muslim and Non-Muslim Countries’.
We have been experiencing serious human rights violations for the past year. Not allowed to get an education, not able to go to work, not able to live with dignity and freedom. 18-year-old Azadi says in the letter that she is unable to express herself or make decisions. For security reasons, only the girls’ first names are included in the letter. The UN has observed that denying girls education and basic rights increases the number of people who experience discrimination in the world. There is no other country in the world that discriminates against women. Markus Potzel said that attacks and exploitation against women have increased due to restrictions. The UN called on Afghanistan to lift restrictions on women and girls and allow them to enjoy basic rights and freedoms.
