Manu Bhaker became the first Indian woman to win a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol at this year’s Olympics on Sunday (July 28). He brought India its first medal in the Paris Olympics. Today, Tuesday (July 30, 2024), Manu created another history by winning bronze in mixed doubles.

Born in Calcutta in 1900, Norman Gilbert Pritchard set records by winning medals in the 200m sprint and 200m hurdles. After 124 years, Manu broke his record. Pritchard, however, won a pair of service medals as a British-Indian athlete. But Manu won the pair of medals representing India for the first time.

Manu and his teammate Sarabjot Singh gave India another medal today by defeating South Korea’s Wonho Lee and Jin Oh Ye by 16-10 points.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Manu and Sarabjot Singh soon after winning the medal. He wrote, ‘Our shooters continue to make us proud! Congratulations to Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh for winning a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the Olympics. Both showed great skill and teamwork. India is incredibly happy with their success. This is Manu’s second consecutive Olympic medal, a reflection of his consistent excellence and dedication.’

Before Manu, shuttler PV Sindhu had won two medals for India at the 2016 Rio Olympics (silver) and 2020 Tokyo Olympics (bronze). Manu set a record of winning two medals in one event, leaving him behind.
