Four alligator hunters caught a huge animal in the state of Mississippi over the weekend, reports WFTV. State wildlife officials say it’s the largest alligator ever found in Mississippi.
The approximately 4.34 meter long individual weighed 364 kilograms.
The previous record holder was 4.28 meters.
The animal was caught from the Yazoo River. The team arrived at the scene after dark, where they saw several alligators, and eventually noticed the giant specimen as well. The men struggled for about 7 hours with the huge male, which was finally able to be lifted out at 3:30 a.m. local time on Saturday.
The Mississippi or pike-nosed alligator is native to the southeastern United States. The largest specimen so far was shot in Louisiana in 1890, that male was 5.84 meters long and weighed approximately 1000 kilograms.
