The German Ministry of Interior revealed the number of incidents that occurred during the European Nations Cup “Euro 2024”, which was held on its territory for a whole month.
The Euro 2024 Championship ended with the Spanish national team winning at the expense of its English counterpart 2-1. Despite the fun and excitement in the matches, crises and problems off the field spoiled the tournament.
According to a statement by the German police, the number of crimes related to the tournament, which attracted about 6 million people to fan zones to watch the matches, reached 2,340 criminal offences related to the Euro, more than 700 of which resulted in bodily harm.
The ministry’s report indicated that the deployment of more than 22,000 police officers daily contributed significantly to reducing riots and crimes, and creating a sense of security among the public.
The German authorities stressed in their statement that more than 1,112 people were prevented from entering Germany, for fear of spreading riots and spoiling the tournament.
Security concerns had been heightened by a series of attacks ahead of the tournament, including several on politicians and by terrorist gangs, although the German Interior Ministry has repeatedly stressed that there are no concrete indications of a threat.
“Cyberattacks, which were a concern due to Ukraine’s involvement, did not play a major role, while extremist slogans and chants were isolated incidents and the number of politically motivated crimes was small,” the ministry said.
