NM State Men’s Tennis Falls to Arizona State in Season Opener

New Mexico State men’s tennis began its 2025-26 spring schedule with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Arizona State on Thursday, January 15, at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Arizona. The Aggies faced a tough test against the Sun Devils in their first competitive action of the season.
Sun Devils Secure Doubles Point
Arizona State gained an early advantage by winning the doubles point. The Sun Devils secured victories on courts one and three to establish control. A 6-3 win on court one was followed by a decisive 6-2 victory from the duo of Mathis Bondaz and Jelani Sarr on court three, clinching the point for Arizona State. Competition on court two was suspended with Arizona State leading 5-3.
Arizona State Dominates Singles Play
The momentum continued to favor Arizona State in singles play, as they swiftly secured three straight-set victories to close out the match. Ofek Shimanov defeated Patrick Lohmann 6-1, 6-1 on court three, setting the tone for the remainder of the afternoon. Shortly after, Mathis Bondaz extended Arizona State’s lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Holland Snell at the number one position. The final point of the match was awarded to Milos Mikovic via walkover on court six.
Unfinished Matches and Upcoming Schedule
Despite the final score, several singles matches remained unfinished. Roko Stipetic was engaged in a closely contested first set against Shu Matsuoka on court two, with the score tied at 7-6 (7-5) when play was halted. Additionally, Laurendi Fischer and Thomas Duforets were competing on courts four and five, respectively, before the match concluded.
The Aggies will continue their road trip, traveling to Phoenix, Arizona, to face Grand Canyon on Friday, January 16.
