Aggies Fall to San Diego State in Heartbreaking 73-72 Contest

Despite battling through a severe injury crisis and facing a formidable opponent, the Utah State women’s basketball team suffered a narrow 73-72 defeat against San Diego State on saturday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The Aggies, playing with only eight available players, showcased resilience against one of the Mountain west’s remaining unbeaten teams.
Short-Handed Aggies Showcase Grit
Entering the game with a depleted roster due to a string of injuries, Utah state faced a important challenge against the league-leading Aztecs.Despite the adversity, the Aggies received standout performances from several players, demonstrating their determination and fighting spirit.
Jamison Heaton led the team in scoring with 18 points, shooting efficiently at 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. She also contributed four rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block.Sophie Sene added a strong performance with 17 points and nine rebounds, while karyn Sanford played a career-high 38 minutes, finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
Freshman guard Paloma Munoz Herreros also reached a new career milestone,scoring 13 points,and freshman Aitana Rosello Lopez dished out a team-high four assists alongside six points. Sophomore Elise Livingston chipped in with five points,six rebounds,and three assists.
Frist Half Battle
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading leads. San Diego State came out strong,establishing an early advantage,but the Aggies responded with a series of impressive runs. Heaton and Sene combined for 15 of USU’s 21 first-quarter points, keeping the game within reach. The Aztecs managed to maintain a narrow lead, taking a 36-33 advantage into halftime.
Second Half Drama
The second half saw an increase in intensity as both teams battled for control. SDSU extended their lead to as many as seven points early in the third quarter, but the Aggies refused to back down. Sanford and Munoz Herreros sparked a comeback, with Sanford converting a crucial and-one play to cut the deficit.
The fourth quarter was a nail-biter, featuring multiple lead changes and clutch performances from both sides. Trailing by three with under a minute to play, the Aggies continued to battle.Sanford tied the game at the free-throw line,and Munoz Herreros followed with three free throws to put USU ahead 67-64. the teams traded baskets in the final minutes, with Sanford tying the game at 69 with a driving layup. After an Aztec layup gave them a two-point advantage, Munoz Herreros responded with a clutch corner 3-pointer with 15 seconds left, giving Utah State a 72-71 lead.
Though, the Aztecs answered with a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line with just four seconds remaining, retaking the lead. On Utah State’s final possession, a contested layup attempt by sene bounced off the rim, sealing a heartbreaking 73-72 victory for San Diego State.
Utah State shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field, 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from 3-point range, and an impressive 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the free-throw line. SDSU shot 45.6 percent (31-of-68) from the field, 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from 3-point range, and 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the free-throw line.

The Aggies (6-9, 2-4) will travel to California to face Fresno State on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m. (MT),before returning home to host Boise State on Saturday,Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. (MT).
