One key theme of the discussion centered on leveraging AI to alleviate the strain on already stretched healthcare resources. “First-level doctors increasingly have more work, and we have to help them make use of AI tools that allow them to optimize their time and identify high-risk patients,†stated a specialist from AstraZeneca Mexico. The potential for AI to rapidly analyze medical images, such as x-rays, was specifically highlighted. “having a tool that scans an x-ray in a matter of seconds is something that will drastically change the way we are doing first-rate medicine and timely diagnosis,†the specialist explained.
Addressing Equity Thru Artificial Intelligence

A director of clinical research at the Riojano Integral Cancer Centre emphasized that artificial intelligence is poised to become “one of the fundamental pillars for equity in treatments.†This is particularly crucial in Latin America, where disparities in access to quality healthcare are notable.

However, realizing the full potential of AI and improving patient outcomes hinges on addressing a long-standing challenge: the lack of comprehensive cancer statistics in Latin America. Panelists agreed that accurate data is essential for understanding the true scope of the problem and developing effective policies. “Without statistics, generating policies that cover everything related to prevention is an enormous difficulty,†one expert noted. The absence of a robust database also impedes the development of clinical models and the optimization of health systems.

Investment priorities must focus on education and awareness, according to Alejandra Toro, president and founder of the Luz Rosa Corporation. “The best medicine in the world is early detection, since it allows ‘progression-free survival,’†she asserted. Though, timely access to accurate diagnoses remains a significant hurdle in Latin America, with many patients relying on private medicine for immediate care.
