AI-Generated Disinformation Fuels Anti-Immigration Sentiment in UK Viral Video
A widely circulated video purportedly showing a British soldier criticizing the government’s immigration policies has been definitively identified as AI-generated, highlighting the escalating threat of synthetic media in shaping public discourse. The video, which spread rapidly across platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, and was translated into multiple languages – German, French, Greek, Hungarian, English, and Swedish – tapped into existing anxieties surrounding immigration in the United Kingdom.
The British government has been steadily tightening its policies towards foreigners, responding to a surge in anti-immigration sentiment. From January to November 2025, 39,292 individuals arrived in the UK via small boats, exceeding the total for all of 2024 (36,816). These policy shifts include reduced protections for refugees and the removal of automatic access to social benefits for asylum seekers.
The video’s authenticity was immediately questioned, prompting an investigation by AFP Factual. Initial analysis revealed inconsistencies and anomalies indicative of digital manipulation. According to Javier Huertas, from the Natural Language Processing and Deep Learning group (NLP-DL) at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the low video quality obscured details that “easily give away” its artificial origins.
Further scrutiny by experts confirmed these suspicions. Siwei Lyu, director of the Media Forensics Laboratory at the University at Buffalo and a distinguished professor at the State University of New York, stated the video displays “unnatural facial expressions, no blinking, and repeated name tags on uniform.” He also noted glitches in the background, including pedestrians appearing to “float or disappear abruptly” and a red bus undergoing erratic shape and color changes.
These findings were corroborated by multiple AI detection tools. Hive Moderation determined with 99.7% confidence that the video was AI-created, while Hiya, as part of the InVID-WeVerify project, assessed the audio as “most likely generated by AI” with a 97% probability.
The alleged soldier in the video delivers a scathing rebuke, stating, “I sacrificed my life to guarantee the freedom of this country and its freedom of expression and now they arrest people for speaking while looking the other way at the crimes committed by invaders. You are a shame to your uniform and an insult to mine.” This emotionally charged message clearly aimed to exploit existing tensions.
While the uniform depicted in the video generally aligns with British military attire, inconsistencies were identified. Experts noted that nameplates on combat uniforms are positioned on the left side and are accompanied by an insignia, features absent in the viral video. Furthermore, the placement and size of the British flag on the sleeve differed from standard protocol.
This case underscores the growing sophistication and accessibility of AI-powered disinformation tools, such as Sora2, and their potential to manipulate public opinion. The rapid spread of this fabricated video demonstrates the urgent need for enhanced media literacy and robust detection mechanisms to combat the proliferation of synthetic media and safeguard the integrity of information ecosystems. The incident serves as a stark reminder that visual evidence alone is no longer a reliable indicator of truth in the digital age.
