Thai Researchers Pioneer AI-Powered Dementia Risk Prediction, Ushering in a New Era of Brain Health

A groundbreaking project integrating artificial intelligence and neurotechnology is poised to revolutionize dementia care and unlock new insights into brain progress, earning a leading Thai scientist a prestigious national award.

Thailand is at the forefront of a burgeoning “Care Economy,” driven by innovative technologies designed to address the challenges of an aging population and improve overall well-being. Central to this movement is a new artificial intelligence model developed by researchers at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, capable of predicting dementia risk with unprecedented accuracy. This advancement promises timely interventions and preventative strategies, offering hope for millions.

The Rise of the “New-S Curve” in Thai Healthcare

The Thailand Management Association (TMA) has identified the Care Economy as a key “New-S Curve” – a sector with high growth potential – for the nation. This recognition underscores the increasing importance of products and services related to physical and mental well-being. The AI model’s effectiveness hinges on comprehensive data. “The more health data you have about the patient, the more beneficial it will be,” explains Dr. Sirawat.

The AI model achieves this by analyzing two key data sets: behavioral and lifestyle information – including exercise habits, diet, and sleep patterns – and, crucially, brain signal data collected from clinics, hospitals, and research labs. By assessing the interplay between these factors, the AI can predict an individual’s risk of brain degeneration and inform the creation of personalized prevention plans.

The project’s ambition extends beyond simply mitigating risk. researchers envision a future of personalized treatment, utilizing technologies like neurostimulation – stimulating the brain with weak electrical signals – to enhance brain function and slow cognitive decline in specific patient subgroups. A dedicated platform is also under development to track brain and physical health comprehensively. Collaboration with private sector partners, such as Aspent tree, a luxury senior living project, is already underway to implement and refine these preventative measures within residential communities.

Expanding the Impact: Youth Mental health and ASEAN Collaboration

The potential applications of this technology are far-reaching. Dr. Sirawat’s team is actively exploring how the AI model can be adapted to understand the intricacies of brain development in Thai youth. This could lead to more effective policies aimed at promoting learning and addressing social factors that impact cognitive growth.

Moreover, the researchers are developing tools to address the growing concerns surrounding mental health, including depression and stress, which affect individuals of all ages. “This is an vital health problem for the general public, working people, the elderly, and even children,” Dr. Sirawat noted.

Looking ahead, Dr. Sirawat emphasizes the importance of collaboration within the ASEAN region. “Asia has quite a lot of academic health information, especially health information of the elderly,” he explained. “Joining forces in ASEAN will help develop and successfully sell these back to the West and Europe.” This collaborative approach promises to elevate the status of regional scientists and contribute to global advancements in brain health.

A Broader Ecosystem of Innovation

Dr. Sirawat’s work was one of three outstanding projects recognized by the TMA in 2025, highlighting the breadth of innovation within Thailand’s care Economy. Prof. Dr. Sakkamon Thephasadin Na Ayutthaya of King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi received an award for his work on low-pressure superheated steam drying, while Asst. Prof.dr. Banyong Rungruangduayboon and colleagues from thammasat University were honored for their innovative rehabilitation kits for stroke patients and the elderly.

The TechInno mart zone showcased over 30 additional innovations,including rapid kidney disease screening technology and A-MED Care,a centralized platform for primary care,demonstrating Thailand’s commitment to leveraging innovation to drive economic growth and improve the lives of its citizens.

This convergence of cutting-edge research, strategic partnerships, and a forward-thinking national agenda positions Thailand as a leader in the global effort to combat dementia and promote brain health for all.
