The boundary between human intention and machine action has just turn into thinner. Researchers have developed a high-precision, ultra-lightweight human-machine interface in the form of an AI smart contact lens that allows a user to control a robotic arm simply by moving their eyes.
Developed by a research team led by Professor Im-Du Jeong of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), this technology transforms gaze information directly into robotic control signals. By eliminating the need for bulky, complex extended reality (XR) headsets, the system represents a significant shift toward a more seamless, wearable platform for human-robot interaction.
The breakthrough, which was featured as the front cover story in the latest issue of the international materials science journal Advanced Functional Materials, combines a novel printing process for optical sensors with AI-driven signal restoration to achieve real-time precision.
Overcoming the Curvature Constraint
Integrating electronics onto a curved surface—specifically one as delicate as a contact lens—has long been a primary hurdle for wearable tech. Traditional semiconductor processes are designed for flat planes. applying them to the curvature of the human eye often results in distortion and mechanical failure.

To solve this, Professor Jeong’s team engineered a process called “Meniscus Pixel Printing” (MPP). This technique leverages the surface tension of the liquid at the tip of a nozzle to “drop” sensor ink precisely onto the curved lens. Because it requires no physical mask, the process can be customized to the specific curvature of an individual’s eye, making it highly viable for personalized medical or industrial lenses.
The result is a lens embedded with a 10×10 array of 100 light-detecting sensors. These sensors track the distribution of light as the eye moves, allowing the system to distinguish between up, down, left, right, and diagonal movements with high precision. The team even successfully integrated a “blink” command, which acts as a trigger for the robotic arm to grip an object.
AI-Driven Resolution Scaling
While 100 sensors are a feat of engineering for a contact lens, they provide relatively low resolution compared to the complex movements of the human eye. The research team bridged this gap using a Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network (SRGAN).
The AI effectively “upscales” the data. While the physical hardware only provides 100 data points, the SRGAN restores this into high-resolution information equivalent to a grid of 80×80—or 6,400 sensors. This allows for a level of granularity that would be physically impossible to print on a lens without compromising its transparency or comfort.
The efficiency of this AI restoration is critical for real-time application. The inference time is approximately 0.03 seconds, meaning the robot reacts almost instantaneously to the user’s gaze. In extreme testing, the team reduced the sensor count to a mere 5×5 array; even then, the AI restoration boosted the recognition accuracy of nine different eye movements from 88.4% to 99.3%.

From Disaster Zones to Surgical Suites
The implications of this “eye-based interface” extend far beyond the novelty of controlling a robot arm. The primary value lies in accessibility and efficiency for users who cannot use their hands.
Professor Jeong noted that the system demonstrates the possibility of an advanced human-robot interaction system that converts visual information into control signals without an external controller. The potential applications are broad:
