Scientists Urge a Positive Vision for Artificial intelligence Amid Growing Concerns

A 2023 survey of 232 scientists revealed that concern about the use of generative AI in daily life outweighed excitement by a nearly three-to-one ratio. Despite this, a pew Research Center study from April found that 56% of AI experts still predict a positive overall impact on society. This disconnect highlights the urgent need for a more nuanced and proactive approach.
“We understand why these audiences see AI as a destructive force, but this negativity engenders a different concern: that those with the potential to guide the development of AI and steer its influence on society will view it as a lost cause and sit out that process,” explained researchers writing in IEEE Spectrum.
Harnessing AI for Good: Examples of Progress
The key, according to many, lies in articulating a clear path towards positive outcomes – mirroring the approach taken in the fight against climate change.While acknowledging and mitigating potential harms is crucial, scientists and technologists must also actively showcase the ways AI can be leveraged for societal benefit.
Numerous examples already demonstrate this potential.AI is breaking down communication barriers by supporting under-resourced languages, including marginalized sign languages and indigenous African languages. It’s also empowering policymakers by incorporating diverse constituent viewpoints through AI-assisted deliberations and legislative engagement. Large language models are being used to combat climate change skepticism by disseminating accurate facts at scale. Furthermore, national laboratories are utilizing AI foundation models to accelerate scientific research, and machine learning is driving breakthroughs in fields like medicine and biology – exemplified by the 2024 Nobel Prize-winning work on protein structure prediction.
These applications, while still in their early stages, demonstrate that AI can be a powerful tool for the public good. scientists are urged to embrace, champion, and expand upon these efforts.
A Call to Action for the Scientific Community
Researchers outlined four key actions in their new book,Rewiring Democracy: How AI Will Transform Our Politics,Government,and Citizenship,that are equally applicable to scientists.
First, they advocate for reforming the AI industry to prioritize ethics, equity, and trustworthiness. This includes developing and promoting ethical norms for AI research and development, and recognizing companies that adhere to these standards.
Second, scientists should actively resist harmful applications of AI by documenting and exposing inappropriate uses. third, they should responsibly leverage AI to improve society and serve their communities. they must advocate for the renovation of institutions – including universities, professional societies, and democratic organizations – to prepare them for the transformative impacts of AI.
“Scientists have a special privilege and responsibility: We are close to the technology itself and therefore well positioned to influence its trajectory,” the researchers emphasized. “We must work to create an AI-infused world that we want to live in.”
As the historian Melvin Kranzberg observed, “Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral.” The ultimate impact of AI will depend on the choices made today. But, as the authors conclude, a positive future cannot be created without a clear and compelling vision of what it looks like.
