Madurai: As the alliance with the BJP has been broken in Tamil Nadu, the party top brass has asked the BJP executives not to comment against the AIADMK.

AIADMK-BJP alliance was formed for the first time in 1998 Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu. The alliance lasted only one year. Again in 2004 Lok Sabha elections, AIADMK formed an alliance with BJP. The election was defeated. As a result, the then General Secretary Jayalalithaa announced that there would never be an alliance with the BJP. After that, the AIADMK did not form an alliance with the BJP in any election till the death of Jayalalithaa. Jayalalithaa criticized Prime Minister Modi during the campaigns for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu. AIADMK won the election by a landslide.

After Jayalalitha’s death, the AIADMK-BJP alliance formed again in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The alliance continued in the 2021 assembly elections as well. The AIADMK-BJP alliance was defeated in both these elections in Tamil Nadu. Annamalai has been appointed as the BJP state president after the 2021 assembly elections in Tamil. At that time, O. Panneerselvam was sidelined in AIADMK and Edappadi Palaniswami emerged as the sole leader. After that there were frequent rifts between AIADMK and BJP.

Several times the two party leaders engaged in a war of words. Annamalai’s comments about Jayalalithaa and Anna created turmoil in the AIADMK. Due to this, AIADMK leaders were involved in trying to replace Annamalai from the post of BJP president. It seems that the BJP leadership did not agree to that.

AIADMK has broken alliance with BJP in this context. Not only in Tamil Nadu but also at the national level, the AIADMK has announced that it will withdraw from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and that it will not have an alliance with the BJP not only in the Lok Sabha elections but also in the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections. AIADMK’s withdrawal from the alliance has given BJP a shock as the Lok Sabha elections are approaching.

Tamil Nadu BJP leaders have not openly commented on the alliance break. When asked by Annamalai, he said that the party top will give the answer. At the same time, CD Ravi, a former top observer of the Tamil Nadu BJP, said that ‘anything can happen in the next 8 months’. Top BJP leaders are likely to try to pacify Edappadi Palaniswami and keep him in the alliance.

At the same time, AIADMK-BJP alliance members are celebrating across Tamil Nadu. In some places the BJP has also burst firecrackers. AIADMK and BJP are engaged in a fierce war of words on social media.

In this case, the BJP has been ordered not to express any opinion against the AIADMK on the issue of alliance. In this regard, BJP’s General Secretary Kesavavinayagam has spoken to the party’s key executives.

Then he said, ‘BJP should not comment against AIADMK on the matter of alliance. Do not give an interview. No matter what happens, we should remain silent and do the party work. “You should not comment on the alliance openly and on social media,” he said. Following this, the BJP executives have started to keep the peace.
