Air Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority have launched a new direct air service connecting Harare and Masvingo, carrying 44 passengers on its inaugural flight. The route aims to ease travel for international buyers attending the 19th Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo, which opens on 9 September 2026.
What was expected to be a temporary transport fix for a single tourism event is now opening the door to a permanent economic shift. Aviation authorities and tourism officials are testing whether domestic flight demand can survive long after the temporary crowds disperse.
New Routes and Fares Target Expo Traffic
The newly established aviation link connects Harare, Masvingo, and Victoria Falls, giving international delegates a direct path to the country’s oldest city. Traditionally, visitors traveling between the capital and Masvingo relied heavily on road transport. The maiden flight carried 44 passengers, proving there is an immediate appetite for faster transit.
To support the influx of delegates for the upcoming expo at the Gymkhana Grounds in Masvingo, ticket pricing structures are now public. According to figures released by the airline, a one-way ticket from Harare to Masvingo costs US$140 (about R2,235), while a return trip is priced at US$240 (about R3,832) based on an exchange rate of approximately R15.97 to US$1.
The airline also introduced service linking Harare with Chiredzi. A one-way ticket for that route runs US$155 (about R2,475), with return tickets available for US$279 (about R4,454).
Ministers Point to International Buyers and Permanent Potential
The 19th Sanganai/Hlanganani Dzimbahwe Tourism Expo runs from 9 to 12 September 2026. President Emmerson Mnangagwa is scheduled to officially open the exhibition, which organizers expect will draw 133 international buyers and 392 exhibitors, alongside nearly 140 international buyers highlighted by tourism leadership.
Deputy Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Tongai Mnangagwa emphasized the logistics behind the new flight paths.
Beyond the immediate expo traffic, government officials are weighing the long-term viability of the aviation bridge. Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi noted that the current connections are actively helping distribute visitor movement. Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Mnangagwa confirmed that officials are looking further ahead.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Provincial Economic Stakes
Sustaining these routes requires more than short-term passenger demand. The Airports Company of Zimbabwe is currently working on the refurbishment and upgrading of Masvingo Airport to boost the city’s capacity for handling regular business traffic. These facility improvements aim to match the region’s broader ambitions of drawing investors to local tourism assets like the Great Zimbabwe Monument, Kyle Recreational Park, and the Lowveld.
By spreading economic activity beyond traditional hubs like Harare and Victoria Falls, regular air service could unlock commercial opportunities in agriculture, mining, and regional services. Whether the newly opened skies become a permanent fixture of Zimbabwe’s domestic transit network depends on post-expo demand and whether local businesses can convert passenger traffic into long-term commercial partnerships.
