A 72-year-old woman, now on the FBI’s most wanted list, allegedly defrauded California banks and financial institutions of $30 million by posing as a member of the prominent McDonnell Aircraft dynasty. Authorities believe Mary Carole McDonnell fled to Dubai in 2018 after a federal arrest warrant was issued.
A federal investigation revealed McDonnell allegedly claimed access to a secret $80 million trust fund as part of her elaborate scheme to secure loans and funding. The case highlights the vulnerabilities within financial institutions and the lengths to which individuals will go to perpetrate fraud.
The Elaborate Scheme
Between July 2017 and May 2018, McDonnell allegedly targeted multiple financial institutions across California. She successfully secured $14.7 million from Banc of California under the guise of being a wealthy heiress. In addition to this substantial sum, she is accused of obtaining another $15 million from various other institutions in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
“McDonnell is alleged to have knowingly, and with the intent to defraud, devised and participated in a scheme to obtain money, funds, assets, and property,” a senior official stated. The FBI believes McDonnell meticulously crafted her false identity to exploit the trust and prestige associated with the McDonnell family name.
From TV Executive to Fugitive
Prior to her alleged fraudulent activities, McDonnell served as the CEO of Bellum Entertainment, a television production company based in Burbank, California, which is now defunct. The McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, the family she falsely claimed affiliation with, was a major aerospace manufacturer headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.
The FBI is actively pursuing McDonnell on charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. The agency is offering a reward for information leading to her arrest.
Identifying the Suspect
Authorities describe McDonnell as a white female, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing approximately 145 pounds. She has blond hair, blue eyes, and a distinctive scar on her right knee. The FBI urges anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to come forward.
The case remains open, and investigators are working with international partners to locate and apprehend McDonnell. The pursuit underscores the FBI’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for financial crimes, even across international borders.
