by ethan.brook News Editor

The investigation into the highway shooting death of 22-year-old Birinder Singh south of Edmonton has taken a significant turn with the recovery of the suspect vehicle, Alberta RCMP confirmed Thursday. The grey 2022 Ford F-150 was recovered, though police have not released details regarding its location or condition. This development comes as investigators continue to appeal to the public for dashcam footage from the area surrounding the shooting, which occurred on Highway 2 near Leduc on March 14, 2026.

The Alberta RCMP are asking anyone who travelled on Highway 2 south of Leduc, near Township Road 490, around 2:50 p.m. On the day of the shooting to come forward, particularly those with dashcam recordings. The search for information continues as authorities attempt to piece together the events leading to Singh’s death and determine a motive.

Details of the Shooting

According to accounts from Singh’s two friends, who were passengers in his vehicle, the incident unfolded rapidly. They described a scenario where the occupants of the pickup truck initially appeared to offer a friendly gesture – a peace sign – which Singh reciprocated. However, the situation quickly escalated. The pickup truck slowed, then accelerated alongside Singh’s 2012 Honda Civic, and a passenger in the truck allegedly fired a gun at Singh. He was struck in the neck and succumbed to his injuries.

“They put his driver’s side window down, and the person who is sitting on the passenger, he took his gun and he gave us a shot,” one of the friends recounted to CityNews Calgary. The truck then sped away from the scene, leaving Singh critically wounded.

Investigation and Concerns of a Hate Crime

The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) has called for the RCMP to investigate the killing as a potential hate crime. Jaspreet Singh, a spokesperson for the WSO, stated on Wednesday that while not yet confirmed by police, the motivation behind the murder “looks like… a hate against immigrants.” CBC News reported that RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff acknowledged the possibility of a hate motive but emphasized that the investigation is proceeding as a homicide investigation regardless.

“Whether it would be hate motivated or not, our investigation remains the same. It’s a homicide,” Savinkoff said. “It’s the worst type of offences that we investigate. But whether it was hate motivated or not, it’s not off the table.”

Birinder Singh’s Background

Birinder Singh, 22, had recently moved to Edmonton from India, having arrived in Canada three years prior. He was a student and his death has deeply affected his family and friends. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support his family during this difficult time.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal

The RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation, and investigators are working to determine if Singh knew his attackers. As of Thursday, police stated they have no images or footage of the suspect vehicle beyond the initial description. The recovery of the grey 2022 Ford F-150 represents a key development, but authorities remain tight-lipped about specifics to avoid compromising the investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is urged to contact Leduc RCMP at 780-980-7267. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online at P3Tips.com, or through the P3 Tips app.

The next update from the RCMP is expected to focus on forensic analysis of the recovered vehicle and continued efforts to identify those responsible for Singh’s death. Investigators are hopeful that dashcam footage from motorists who were in the area at the time of the shooting will provide crucial leads.
