The Circle of Sports Journalists has announced its annual list of the most outstanding athletes, with Alberto Abarza, Nicolás Burgos, and Bruno Miranda taking home top honors for 2025. The selections, made by over a hundred members of the guild between December 16 and 18, recognize excellence across both conventional and adapted sports. What defines the best athletes in Chile? According to the organization, the “Best Athletes award represents the main and maximum recognition of the performance of the exponents, as it is an award given by critics and given annually since 1951.”
Alberto Abarza’s Stellar 2025
Abarza, a resident of Villa Los Héroes, showcased his prowess at the Para swimming world championships in Singapore, securing his 11th medal. The 41-year-old athlete earned a bronze medal in the 200 meter freestyle, solidifying his ambitions for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. “These may be my last competitions. I’m preparing and giving my all,” Abarza stated.
Bruno Miranda: A Rising Star in Karting
The 10-year-old karting sensation enjoyed a remarkable 2025, marked by his debut on Argentine tracks and his second consecutive Rotax national championship. Miranda’s crowning achievement came at the prestigious “Rotax Grand Final 2025,” where he clinched a silver medal. “You can’t imagine the joy I feel right now. This has not been an easy year, but without a doubt everything was worth it to close it with this ending. Thank you to everyone who has trusted me during these years and to those who believed in this madness!” Miranda expressed.
Nicolás Burgos: Table Tennis Excellence
Burgos, the nation’s leading table tennis player, competed in several prestigious international tournaments throughout 2025, including the WTT Feeder Cappadocia II, the WTT Star Contender Foz do Iguaçu, and the China Smash 2025, maintaining a position within the world’s top 100. His performance at the Individual World Championship in Doha, coupled with a bronze and silver medal haul at the Pan American Games in the United States, cemented his status as Chile’s premier representative in the sport. Burgos faced formidable opponents such as Hugo Calderano (3rd in the world), Jang Woojin (12th in the world), Tomokazu Harimoto (10th in the world), and Kanak Jha (22nd in the world).
Burgos and Abarza will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Monday, December 29, at 12:00 p.m., at the Las Condes Municipal Theater. They are both contenders for the “Best of the Best” award, which Abarza previously won in 2021. Bruno Miranda will also be honored with the “Sports Promise” award alongside shooter Diego Parra.
