Alcaraz Dominates Moutet, Advances to Australian Open Fourth Round

A commanding performance from Carlos Alcaraz saw the world No. 1 defeat Corentin Moutet 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 on Friday, securing his place in the fourth round of the Australian Open. The Spaniard is pursuing the only Grand Slam title currently missing from his impressive record.

Alcaraz will face American Tommy Paul on Sunday, with a quarter-final berth on the line. Despite the straight-sets victory, the match wasn’t without a momentary scare for the top seed.

The second set saw a shift in momentum after Alcaraz initially raced to a 3-0 lead. He then conceded four consecutive games, briefly threatening to extend the match. However, Alcaraz responded emphatically, reeling off six games in a row to regain control and ultimately close out the set.

The match was characterized by a fascinating tactical battle, described as a “battle of amortizations” by Alcaraz himself. “I told my box that I was tired of running on its pads,” Alcaraz reportedly said, acknowledging the demanding nature of facing an opponent skilled in drop shots. “But today, he is the one who won the battle for the number of amortizations,” he added with a laugh, after achieving his 100th Grand Slam victory.

While both players are renowned for their exceptional ball-handling skills, the match’s potential for spectacle was somewhat hampered by a high number of unforced errors – 20 for Alcaraz and 34 for Moutet throughout the 2-hour, 5-minute contest.

This victory marks another step in Alcaraz’s quest for complete Grand Slam dominance, and sets up an intriguing clash with Paul as he continues his Australian Open campaign.
