Alcázar de San Juan: I Muestra de Teatro Escolar y Juvenil “Ábrego Siglo XXI” – March 2024

Alcázar de San Juan is once again prioritizing arts education with the launch of the I Muestra ‘Ábrego Siglo XXI’ – a theater festival designed to reignite a beloved tradition. The initiative, unveiled this Tuesday by Culture Councilor Cristina Perea, aims to recapture the spirit of a regional theater competition that showcased the talent of children and young people in the city for three decades.

The return of this event underscores a belief in the power of the performing arts to nurture crucial skills. “We firmly believe that theater offers multiple benefits to children and young people: it stimulates imagination, creativity, memory, and improves social and expressive abilities,” Perea stated. The new format seeks to empower schools to take center stage at the Teatro Emilio Gavira, providing a platform for student performances.

This inaugural edition of the festival will feature participation from six educational institutions: the Picasso, Santa Clara, Jesús Ruiz, and El Santo primary schools, alongside the María Zambrano and Juan Bosco secondary schools. Performances are scheduled throughout March, taking place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays during school hours. This timing is intentional, encouraging students to attend as an audience and share the experience with their families. The festival, a celebration of theatrical arts in education, is designed to be accessible and inclusive.

Student groups, guided by their teachers and professors, will present a diverse range of plays varying in length from 30 to 60 minutes. To support these endeavors, the Alcázar de San Juan City Council will provide each participating school with a grant of 100 euros, earmarked for covering expenses related to set design, makeup, or educational materials. This financial assistance aims to alleviate the burden on schools and ensure that students have the resources they need to create compelling performances.

The festival will culminate on March 25th with a special event coinciding with the approach of International Theatre Day on March 27th. As a reward for their participation, all young actors and actresses will receive complimentary tickets to see ‘Gag Movie’ by the Yllana Teatro company. During the closing ceremony, each participating school will also be presented with a commemorative trophy designed by artist Alejandro Escribano, who was recently appointed as a new teacher at the Municipal Culture Patronage’s Ceramics Workshop.

Reviving a Local Tradition

The ‘Ábrego Siglo XXI’ festival is not merely a new event. it’s a deliberate effort to revive a cherished tradition. For approximately 30 years, Alcázar de San Juan hosted a regional theater competition under the direction of Antonio Segura, fostering a vibrant theatrical community. This new iteration aims to build upon that legacy, providing a platform for young performers and enriching the cultural landscape of the city. The initiative represents a significant investment in the future of the arts in Alcázar de San Juan, recognizing the importance of cultural programming for all ages.

Looking ahead, the City Council plans to continue supporting arts education initiatives and fostering a thriving cultural scene. The success of the ‘Ábrego Siglo XXI’ festival will undoubtedly inform future programming decisions, ensuring that the voices of young artists continue to be heard in Alcázar de San Juan.
